Aussie Starters: Renting Right

Renting Right – A Free International Student Event

Whether you're living in a share house, rooming house, or student accommodation, understanding your rights as a renter is one of the best ways to feel confident and secure in your new home.

📅 Date & Time: Monday 20th July 2026 | 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
📍 Location: Salvation Army Geelong, 239 Malop St., Geelong VIC 3220

Join us for an informative evening with the Office of the Commissioner for Residential Tenancies to learn everything you need to know about renting in Victoria. Hear firsthand from an international student about their own housing journey, discover the different types of accommodation available, and gain practical tips for navigating the Australian rental system.

With upcoming rooming house inspections taking place across Geelong, we'll also explain what inspections involve, why they're conducted, and what to expect if your accommodation is selected. Most importantly, you'll learn that inspections are designed to ensure housing providers are meeting their obligations—not to inspect or penalise residents.

What you'll learn:

  • The different types of student accommodation in Victoria

  • Your rights and responsibilities as a renter

  • What rooming house inspections are and what to expect

  • What to do if you experience poor or unsafe housing conditions

  • Where to access support and who to contact if you need help

There will also be plenty of time to ask questions, so whether you're renting for the first time or have been living in Australia for a while, this is a great opportunity to gain practical advice and have your questions answered by the experts.

The Lounge is a drop-in centre, and registrations help with catering.
