Join us for Know Your Work Rights, a practical workshop designed specifically for international students to help you navigate employment in Australia with confidence. Whether you're working your first casual job, considering an ABN role, or simply want to better understand your rights, this session will give you the tools and knowledge you need.

The workshop will be facilitated by Bryan Wu from the Migrant Workers Centre, who will share practical advice and answer your questions in a supportive, jargon-free environment.

What you'll learn:

• Understanding workplace rights and responsibilities for international students

• Understand Subclass 500 & 485 visa work conditions and common misconceptions about work limitations

• The difference between a Tax File Number (TFN) and an Australian Business Number (ABN), including when each is appropriate

• How sham contracting can occur and what warning signs to look out for

• Breakdown superannuation, minimum pay rates, leave, and other workplace entitlements

• Recognising workplace exploitation and understanding the legal protections available

• How to use tools such as the Record My Hours app to track your work hours and build evidence if a workplace dispute arises

If you've worked in hospitality, retail, events, delivery driving, tutoring, or almost any other casual job, chances are you've experienced situations that didn't feel quite right. The good news is you're not alone, and you don't have to figure it out by yourself.

Join us for Your Rights: Security & Stability, a practical workshop designed to help international students understand their workplace rights and feel more confident navigating employment in Australia.

From 5:00–6:00 PM, you'll have the opportunity to bring along your payslip for an optional one-on-one pay check, where you can have your pay rates, hours, and entitlements explained. Not working or don't have any questions? No worries! You can simply relax, meet other students, or enjoy some casual games before the workshop begins.

The main workshop kicks off at 6:00 PM, led by people with firsthand experience working in these industries. It's free, practical, and jargon-free, giving you real-world knowledge you can use in your current or future job.

Meet Your Facilitator

Appiah Annan is originally from Cape Coast, Ghana, and is a master dancer and hand drummer. Appiah is passionate about using the arts to encourage respect, togetherness, and understanding across cultures. His engaging teaching style makes this workshop suitable for everyone, whether you're picking up a drum for the first time or have experience with music.

Group drumming has been widely recognised as a powerful tool for mental health and wellbeing. The steady rhythms, repetition and shared timing can help calm the nervous system, support focus, lift mood, and create a sense of connection with the people around you. Drumming gives people a simple, enjoyable way to be present in the moment while sharing an experience with others.

With upcoming rooming house inspections taking place across Geelong, we'll also explain what inspections involve, why they're conducted, and what to expect if your accommodation is selected. Most importantly, you'll learn that inspections are designed to ensure housing providers are meeting their obligations—not to inspect or penalise residents.
